‘Seoul Design Cloud’

The Venue for Sharing Design Communication 

Held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) from September 17-26, 2018

 

-‘Seoul Design Cloud 2018,’ an event filled with design communication, including Seoul Design Week, Seoul Fashion Week and Seoul Upcycling Week is held at DDP for 10 days. 

- The event is aimed at introducing citizens to the design projects being promoted by the Seoul Design Foundation, an affiliated organization of the SMG, and sharing all relevant information under the design policy direction of the SMG to build Seoul into a humane decent city through universal design making everyone comfortable. 

- It is also a civic engagement design event that seeks to revitalize DDP making its 4th anniversary in 2018 under the banner of ‘Design Cloud’ based on the examples of urban design innovation and design communication among citizens in 20 cities around the world. 

- Sharing information on sustainable human city design criterias designed to solve social issues through design and build cities more safe and secure.

 

□The Seoul Design Foundation (President Choi Kyung-ran) announced it will play host to ‘Seoul Design Cloud’ as the sharing venue through design for ten days from September 17 to 26 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul.

 

○Seoul Design Cloud is ‘a venue for civic engagement and communication through design’ place where designers, citizens, students, design experts, domestic and overseas networks, companies, institutions, schools, and communities gather to share ideas and discuss directions of the following: (1) The DDP Design Museum and its role as the Asian design hub and ways to make the location as an attractive tourist attraction, (2) The reinvigoration of DDP operations through win-win cooperative measures with the Dongdaemun commercial district, (3) The discussion regarding the recovery of the public nature in DDP functions through the input of the design ecosystem and civic engagement task force 

 

○Especially, Seoul Design Cloud 2018 has been organized as a venue for civic engagement and communication to drive the reinvigoration of DDP that celebrates its 4th anniversary in 2018. Under the banner of ‘Design Cloud’, various programs have been prepared including conferences, exhibitions, marketplaces, events, and contests.

 

□During the same period (Sep. 17-26), DDP also features the ‘Design Cloud (Seoul Design Cloud)’ exhibition based on the concept of zero waste in three specific themes such as ‘Human City Design,’ ‘Seoul Design Brand’, and ‘Design by Dongdaemun.’ 

 

○Specifics of the three exhibitions held at DDP to seek ways to build Seoul into a human-centered, design-centered humane city include: (1) ‘The Sustainable Human City Design Exhibition’, designed to share future city visions based on design experiences in Asia and Europe; (2) ‘The Seoul Design Brand Exhibition’ that reinterprets the past and present writing supplies used in Korea, China, and Japan as ‘the tools of communication’ as well as the tools of inspiration and creation; and (3) ‘The Design by Dongdaemun Exhibition,’ a win-win project with the Dongdaemun commercial district, participated by small business owners and young designers.

 

○It is notable that ‘The Seoul Design Brand Exhibition’ aimed at reinterpreting writing supplies used in Korea, China, and Japan from the past to the present; features more than 1,000 pieces including those of Seoul showing off differences by generation, those of Japan introducing function-centered instruments, and those of China displaying a huge collection of past and modern writing supplies and instruments in association with the Palace Museum (located in the Forbidden City).

 

○Also, the ‘Let’s Meet Tomorrow, Seoul and Pyeongyang Exhibition’  held at Design Pathway features the typography, graphic design, illustrations and moving images created by more than 40 domestic and international graphic designers and illustrators, whose pleasant and joyful imagination enables visitors to experience the future of Seoul and Pyeongyang. The exhibition will become significant event, particularly given the fact the winners of Seoul-Pyeongyang Logo Design Contest will be used for future inter-Korean exchanges including sporting events. 

 

○Overall, Seoul Design Cloud will present various conferences, exhibitions, marketplaces, and events from September 17-26, including ‘Young Designers’ Palace Picnic Fashion Show’ which will introduce citizens Korean-style palace picnic fashion ideas from 50 graduates of the Fashion Design Department in 16 universities in Seoul. 

 

○Choi Kyung-ran, President of the Seoul Design Foundation quoted “Seoul Design Cloud 2018 will become an opportunity, not only for the Seoul Design Foundation which is an affiliated organization of the SMG to introduce its various design projects at one location, but also for all participants including citizens and experts in domestic and overseas design industries, academic circles, and research institutes to share information on design under the design policy direction of the SMG to build Seoul into a humane decent city through universal design making everyone comfortable. I also hope that Seoul Design Cloud 2018 will become a venue utilized for communication in reinvigorating the country’s design industry through the promotion of youth-led startups, the support of small business owners, and the revitalization of Dongdaemun commercial district.”
